Comprehensive stitch guide that is built to last

I'm a big fan of Knitting VISUAL Quick Tips by Sharon Turner, and I have come to expect that Wiley's VISUAL imprint will have great step-by-step photos. As with the Crochet Stitches VISUAL Encyclopedia (Teach Yourself VISUALLY Consumer), Knitting Stitches VISUAL Encyclopedia instead assumes the reader has the basics down, so don't expect to see those photos or illustrations.

The book is organized into ten chapters: Knit and Purl Patterns; Rib Patterns; Bobbles and Textured Stitches; Slipstitch Patterns; Twist-Stitch Patterns; Cable Patterns; Drop-stitch, Yarn Overs, Eyelet, and Lace; Borders and Edgings; Creative Stitches and Combinations; and Color Knitting (which is further subdivided into Stranded Color Patterns, Intarsia Patterns and Motifs, and Color-Slip Patterns). The Appendix includes a key to pattern abbreviations and stitch symbols. The stitch symbols key also includes a description of how to formulate the stitch (e.g., "K3tog on RS: Knit 3 stitches together as 1.").

What I like about this book
The book is well organized, making it easy to find a stitch you liked later.

Each stitch is photographed in a vibrant swatch and includes both pattern abbreviations and a stitch symbol chart.

While the stitch guide includes some of the "old faithful" stitch patterns you would expect to find in a knitting stitch guide, there are also some new (to me) combinations.

Most of my other knitting stitch guides primarily use aran or off-white yarns, so this book is definitely more attractive to look at as there is a broader color palette for the swatches.

The Introduction. That's right, I said it. You shouldn't skip through this 3 page section, which outlines each chapter and explains the techniques used. It also describes (briefly) how different yarn choices will impact the look of the stitch and provides some tips about calculating your yarn needs for a project. In particular, if you don't know your Intarsia from your elbow, read the explanation of the different color knitting techniques.

I worked up a swatch using a few random stitch patterns that caught my eye. I didn't have any problems following the patterns so I would imagine they are all clearly written.

I especially liked the stitches in the Stranded Color Patterns and Color-Slip Patterns subsections of the Color Knitting chapter, the Bobbles and Textured Stitches chapter, and the Drop-stitch and Yarn Over patterns.

The hardcover binding will make sure this book lasts through all of the abuse a good stitch guide will get.

What I don't like (or what's missing)
I am a bit disappointed when a stitch guide lacks illustrations or photos explaining some of the techniques for a newbie. This deficit was, in my opinion, mostly redeemed by the explanations given in the Introduction.

Although the book is hardcover, it doesn't easily lay flat while knitting and reading.

Maybe I'm just not that excited by Intarsia in general, but I didn't see myself making anything in that section (a teapot with a flower? a robot?). If you are really into cutesy Intarsia, though, you will probably love these 17 stitch patterns.

If you are unfamiliar with stitch symbol charts, you may find it annoying to flip back to the glossary instead of having a key on each page.

Summary:
This book is definitely a solid stitch guide to add to (or start) your stitch guide collection. It is well organized, visually attractive, and includes stitch symbols and abbreviations for each stitch. The book explores a range of stitch types and is built to last as a hardcover. Beginners or inexperienced pattern readers might find it challenging since there are no illustrations or pictures to walk you through the basics. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars, with the caveat that a beginner will need to be adventurous or have another resource book in her/his library to use this book effectively.

I recently downloaded this to my Kindle. The pictures of the stitches are great and the book is set up wonderfully but I am giving this a 3 star not because of the stitch content (I would actually give it 5 stars for that) but the 3 is because in the Kindle edition of this book the section in the back that has the symbols, their meanings, and how to's for each one is so small and blurry it is impossible to read them. The text size cannot be changed for this section for some reason (and I have tried to do this on my Kindle, the Kindle app on my phone, and the Kindle app on my tablet) but the text in the rest of the book can be changed. Although I have other hardcover stitch books, I was really interested in having one on the Kindle so I would always have a stitch book with me and this works great for that but you really need to be fluent in the chart symbols and how to do all of them.

The only thing missing...

I have found this book to be very helpful to look up unfamiliar stitches while reading patterns new patterns. The only thing missing?? An alphabetical index of the stitches. Its rather painful to have to look at the 7 pages of table of contents and look at all the stitch names to find the one you want. I just find it hard to believe that a reference book such as this does not have an index.

About the Author
The author and editor of numerous books and articles in the areas of ethics and social and political philosophy, William H. Shaw obtained a Ph.D. in political philosophy from the London School of Economics and teaches philosophy at San Jose State University, where he served as chair of the department for eleven years. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Zimbabwe, the University of Hong Kong, and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He has two other books with Cengage Learning, SOCIAL AND PERSONAL ETHICS and MORAL ISSUES IN BUSINESS (with Vincent Barry).

Vincent Barry is Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Bakersfield College, having taught there for thirty-four years as well as being a highly successful philosophy textbook author.

Great Reading!

This book was a requirement for my Business Ethics course. I had a chance to read it all over, and really enjoyed all the concepts. Definitely recommended. However, it's not one of the books that I'd pick to read just for fun. It touches up on interesting ethical concepts, such as: pay inequality and cheap labor overseas, as well as covers the moral issues when it comes to the decision-making process. Each chapter has a few nice stories at the end, which could be looked at from different points of view. Great reading never the less.

Rented the eBook for more than 5 months and 4 months later it says that my rental has expired. Worse thing is, there's no way to prove that I rented it for as long as I have. So I proceeded to rent it out again. But this time it was never sent to my device. and I paid for the rental. Worse ever

I have found this text to be the most consistent with the organization and structure of my course. Appreciate the blending of cultural, political, and economic aspects of international.

About the Author
Richard Schaffer is a Professor Emeritus of Business Law in the Department of Finance of the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University. He taught for twenty-five years in the areas of business law, international business transactions, and the law of international trade and investment, and founded the university's international business and business study abroad programs. Prior to academia, Professor Schaffer worked with the United Nations examining the relationship between corrupt practices, multinational corporations, and socio-economic development, and also served as rapporteur of UN working groups on international economic crime. He has consulted to business schools and industry trade groups, as well as businesses. Professor Schaffer received his J.D. from the University of Mississippi and his LL.M. from New York University.

Beverley Earle is a Professor and Chair of the Law, Taxation and Financial Planning Department, at Bentley University, Waltham, Massachusetts where she has been on the faculty since 1983. She teaches international business law at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as courses on the legal environment of business and law and society. She graduated with a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from Boston University and is admitted to practice in Massachusetts. Her law review articles have been published by universities including U.C. Berkeley, Northwestern, Cornell and University of Iowa (forthcoming) to mention a few. She has received numerous awards including the Academy of Legal Studies in Business Holmes-Cardozo award as well as Bentley's Scholar of the Year, Innovation in Teaching Award and Outstanding Scholarly Contribution Award. She is past President of the International Section of the ALSB. Since 2006, she has been an appointee to the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers Hearing Committee on Attorney Discipline.

Filiberto Agusti is a partner in the international law firm of Steptoe & Johnson, LLP, where he has practiced law since 1978. He represents governments, multinational corporations, manufacturers, and investors in international arbitrations, lawsuits between multinational enterprises, and transactional negotiations. His work involves disputes and negotiations over international infrastructure, power generation facilities, cross-border corporate acquisitions, international joint ventures, and bankruptcy reorganizations. Mr. Agusti has authored articles for the Harvard Law Review and other legal publications, is a frequent speaker at professional seminars around the world, and regularly comments on legal issues on camera for Univision, Telemundo, and CNN en Espanol. Mr. Agusti was a law clerk to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and received his law degree from Harvard Law School, where he was a senior editor of the Harvard Law Review.

This textbook is very well written.

Very well written and easy to understand

Despite that the book is very expensive and a required text book for college, I think it is an excellent book. It is informative and easy to read. The author made the information interesting and kept me engaged. If I didn't need the money (from reselling it), I would keep it as a reference guide.

Powell (1908-72) fused a complex mix of temperament and tactics into a discomforting, loud leadership of racial protest that insistently exposed the gap between American principle and performance, argues Hamilton. Probing Powell's rise and fall, Hamilton moves from the 1930s, when Powell became a New York City councilman, to his service starting in 1945 as a U.S. Representative, and then to his chairing of the House Education and Labor Committee, his expulsion from the House in 1967, and his defeat at the polls in 1970. Hamilton's able analysis of the unapologetic, openly arrogant champion of civil rights reflects the race issues of the day within a prism of political theory focused on the conflict of basic American values like majority rule and minority rights. The first full-length biography--and likely the authoritative one for years to come--of the flamboyant black congressman who, as civil-rights gadfly and as libertine, exemplified the gap between our nation's ideals and practices that was given a name in Gunnar Myrdal's ``American Dilemma.'' Blessed with good looks, eloquence, and a bully pulpit (he succeeded his father as head of the Abyssinian Baptist Church, the nation's largest black congregation), Powell became ``Mr. Civil Rights'' in the pre-King era by combining agitation and electoral politics. As congressman from Harlem, Powell denounced racist southern colleagues and introduced the ``Powell Amendment'' to deny federal funds to projects or organizations that practiced discrimination. In 1960, he became chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor, then the strongest position ever held by a black in the US government. Columbia Univ. political-science professor Hamilton (The Bench and the Ballot, 1973; The Black Preacher in America, 1972; Black Power, with Stokely Carmichael, not reviewed) also highlights how the Democratic politician became a thorn in the side of ally and foe alike. The Dark Side of Adam Clayton Powell

Charles V. Hamilton calls his biography of Adam Clayton Powell, Jrs. THE POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY OF AN AMERICAN DILEMMA. The American dilemma that he refers to is Gunnar Myrdal's 1944 thesis. Myrdal concluded taht American society possess a strong belief in liberty, equality, respect for law and democracy but when it comes to blacks, those same values do not always apply. So the society says one thing and does another as it relates to blacks and other minorities. Hamilton argues that this "blatant contradiction in American society between the Creed and reality was constantly highlighted by white and black advocates of civil rights." In Adam Clayton Powell, Hamilton finds the personification of this dilemma. He asserts that Powell made that dilemma the main issue of his public life. As a result, Powell's constant attempts to raisse and challege America's dilemma is the theme that Hamilton uses to portray his subject.

For students of Powell who may have read Wil Haygood's KING OF THE CATS, Hamilton's portrayal is much different. As the title implies, Hamilton primarily sticks to the political side of Powell's career while Haygood presents a much more personal account of the preacher/congressman. While I came away from the Haygood work feeling attached and sympathetic of Powell, I came away from Hamilton's work realizing that Powell had an extremely dark side and that many of his problmes were self inflicted. In addiiton, for the serious students, Hamilton's footnotes are invaluable.

One of Hamilton's major arguments is that Powell endorsed Eisenhower in 1956 in the hopes of stopping further IRS and FBI investigations of his personal finances. He also makes it clear that Powell had access to the White House during the Eisenhower administration, something that he did not have with Truman. Of course, he had created his own persona non grata status with the Turman White House when he attempted to have his wife, Hazel Scott perform at the DAR hall in Washington. It seems that Powell was attempting to do another "Marian Anderson" event and failed. One can easily conclude that Powell enjoyed the access he had with Ike's staff and figured that Sstevenson was not going to win anyway, so Powell feathered his own nest. While he wanted the poublic to believe his endorsement was for the sake of Stevenson's poor stand on Civil Rights, it is more likely that Powell enjoyed and wanted to continue his access to power.

Hamilton relates how Powell threatened to expose Bayard Rustin and Martin Luther King for an alleged homosexual relationship in order to force them to call off a demonstration at the Republican National Convention in 1960. Powell knew full well the accusations were false but the blackmail served his purpose.

In 1966 Powell scuttled an attempt by James Farmer of CORE to establish a national literacy project. Hamilton argues that in return, Powell hoped to be given White House assistance in having his New York libel judgment reduced.

As does Haygood, and Powell himself in his autobiography ADAM BY ADAM, Hamilton demonstrates how Powell made one of the worse decisions of his life in ignoring the libel suit brought against him by a New York woman that he referred to as a "bag woman." The eventual legal repercussions from the law suit (Powell refused to even show up at the trial) along with Ppowell's flagrant disregard for his congressional duties, excessive spending of congressional funds and egotistical and sometimes hedonistic life style all conributed to his demise. And when he needed the support of other civil rights leaders, who who had been victims of his wrath while he ws in power, they where not there for him as his power wained.

As the sage progresess and Powell gets closer and closer to the time that Congress refuses to seat him, the reader realizes that when Powell pointed the finger of racism at his attackers, as the old saying goes, he was pointing four fingers back at himself.

Oscar DePriest was the first black person elected to Congress in the 20th Century. But Powell was really the first black congressman that African Americans nationwide identified with. He came to congress driving a Jaguar in 1944, wearing $500 suits and looking like a movie star. He became the voice of Black America in congress, especially in the area of desegregation of the military. But his Powell Amendment had its good sides and its bad. While it raised the issue of unequal treatment, it also resulted in the defeat of legislation that would have been beneficial to Black America.

Powell's final demise was no doubt self inflictd. In the final years of his career he midjudged the reapportionment process allowing for a change in his district. Times change and voters change and eventually his base of support eroded. His religious base eroded. With his life syle it seems hard to imagine that he could be identified with the church. Harlem residents realized tht they needed a congressman, not an aging symbol of the past fishing in Bimini. As Hamilton points out, if Powell had fought before for final election defeat as much as he did after the defeat in attempts to get recounts and court battles over the election, he probably would have won.

Adam Clayton Powell died in 1972. It took almost 20 years for historians to write serious biographies of his life. Hamilton's contribution is excellent and well worth the read, not only for the life of Adam Clayton Powell, but for a history of America during the 20th century.

Influential political person with celebrity showmanship status

He came from a very conservative background with strong ancestral roots. His parents & formative years plus his father's connections in the community & church helped launch him into his own career starting almost at the top. The sound reputation of Mr. Adam Powell Sr. & the esteem that his parishioners held for him contributed to the success of his son who was less than
orthodox in his private life. Unfortunately parts of the book were missing so it's hard to come up with 100% of the story.

The Bible for Agaves

This is a great reference for anyone interested in Agaves. Yes, it is 1982; yes, there are no color photos. But there is more information on Agaves in this book's 670 pages than most people can imagine, including habitat and distribution, detailed descriptions, cultural uses, keys to various Agave groups, and much more. If you love Agaves (or just studying them) you need this book.

Entertaining

GOLD MINE is about a stock market manipulation scheme affecting the stocks of South African gold mining companies by sabotaging the mines. Much of the action of the novel is set in a gold mine. The extensive descriptions of the mine, mining methods, and processing methods are clear and accurate-with one possible exception. Mr. Smith's use of the term "heavy media separation" seems to conflict with standard usage. I found the characters to be shallow-which really means that I could not identify nor empathize well with them. But this is, after all, an action novel, and it is quite entertaining as such. The plot is predictable, but not plodding.

WILBER SMITH NOVELS
Wilber Smith's novels are characterized by hard edged characters in harsh, unforgiving environments and situations, against implacable foes. When one of Smith's "heroes" succeeds, his victory is usually pyrrhic-as is often the case in the real world. This gritty pioneer mentality is appropriate to South Africa.

I imagine that many readers will conclude that many of the characters in Smith's novels lack dimension. But that's a failure of people, not of the author. There ARE nasty, vengeful people in the world who are NOT complex, and Smith describes such people accurately. Smith does not attempt to explain such people-which I appreciate (in contrast with most modern novels filled with dreary shallow pop-psychology). Smith's heroes are men who manage to exceed the sum of their heredity and environment-as is often the case in the real world.

Nobody does it like Wilbur Smith!

Want to learn about Africa without a tedious history course? Try Wilbur Smith's novels. Even though events and locations are fictionalized, there's apparently enough accuracy to give one a good sense of the particular area of the continent -- all enfolded in a fascinating and exciting story line.

The story is ok but the good part of this book is the setting. Wilbur Smith knew the big gold mines first-hand and wove that into the story.
