Treading listlessly over old ground, freelance writer Aria offers a biography of the "Russian superstar Casanova." "Dancing, he has always been the greatest," even though fellow members of Leningrad's Kirov Ballet, the author observes, called the teenaged Baryshnikovshort, stocky and quick"hockey puck." Few new facts emerge, but it is interesting to note that the dancer's film appearances began in 1971 with his debut in the Soviet-made Fiesta , in which he played a "handsome young matador . . . ready to meet his lonely fate." A "genius he was" at the barre, and although financial and artistic turmoil have rocked the American Ballet Theater periodically since Baryshnikov became artistic director in 1980, "Misha has learned about himself. He admits that he's moody and that when he's down he's intolerable, but he says he's working on it." This remains a celebrity portrait, never bursting the bubble of fame to find the man inside it. Photos not seen by PW.

At age 40 Baryshnikov still has a long career ahead of him as choreographer, artistic director of American Ballet Theater, and actor. This biography of the great ballet dancer can therefore really only tell part of the "story." Two earlier books, Nina Alovert's Baryshnikov in Russia ( LJ 12/84) and Gennady Smakov's Baryshnikov: From Russia to the West ( LJ 4/15/81) have focused just on the dancer's early career.-- Ed.) The book relates important events in Baryshnikov's life--his experiences as a young dancer in Russia, and his dizzying number of U.S. dance and acting projects. Baryshnikov's personal side is presented, too, including his much publicized romantic liaisons and commitment to parenting. While the book has little new information or substantial journalistic reporting, it is, nevertheless, a serviceable and straightforward biography for the YA audience.

Not all that simple for US undergrads

Really, I could give this book four stars on some points, like its introducing Lagrangian mechanics at an introductory level. And it isn't a bad book at all -- just that it is NOT for first year undergrads at US universities as it is for Europeans who tend to be ahead of us at this level. It uses vector calculus almost from the start, for example, and its problem sets are difficult compared to most problems in Serway and other standard first-year physics texts. However, as a supplement (if you want to spend $37 for a small book), it will likely give you more of an edge in the long run if you can figure it out.

A Deliciously Twisty Treat

In this spicy standalone, our leading lady is a restless wife with nine years of marriage under her sassily costumed belt. One fateful night, she gets more than she bargained for – or ever anticipated -- when she opens her door to a costumed visitor who's been watching her for longer than she could ever realize.

This gem of a page-turner is a wicked blend of erotica, adventure, and the idea that you never know what will happen when you open the proverbial door to the unexpected. As a reader, I also appreciated the fact that this is a complete story – no cliff-hangers, teases, or unresolved plot-lines. In fact, the story has an actual plot, which isn't always the case with these, ahem, "bedtime" stories for grownups.

Delicious dialogue, lots of spicy action, and an unexpected twist make this story a real treat.

Jesse Joren, omg woman, I absolutely love you! Can we be Best friends?? Lol. I have fallen in love with another cool author!! You had me fooled there! Man, you can write one dark erotica!! What can I say about: "All Mine!" Omg! You just don't understand how frickin "AMAZING" this book is. I absolutely love this book. LOVE IT! Had everything I loved in this book!! I won't ruin this beautifully dark read by divulging any details. Because it will give it all away... The only complaint I have is, "It's To Short!!" Jessica, needs more!! Lol.

In a vibrantly rich, moving multicultural tapestry, Takaki ( Strangers from a Different Shore ) provides a fresh slant on American society by tracing the interwoven histories of Native Americans, Africans, Chinese, Japanese, Chicanos, Irish and Jewish immigrants. We see how 17th-century white planters, anxious to weaken an armed, politicized, white proletariat, enslaved an unarmed black workforce, with explosive consequences. We follow Chicano struggles as an integral part of America's westward expansion and learn how Jewish-black solidarity extends back to John Brown's uprising in 1856 against slavery in Kansas, an insurrection in which Jews participated. We see how oppression of the Irish (the first people the English called "savages") foreshadowed the subjugation of Native Americans. Interweaving voices from all points on the ethnic rainbow, Takaki, ethnic studies professor at UC Berkeley, has produced a brilliant revisionist history of America that is likely to become a classic of multicultural studies. YA-Takaki traces the economic and political history of Indians, African Americans, Mexicans, Japanese, Chinese, Irish, and Jewish people in America, with considerable attention given to instances and consequences of racism. The narrative is laced with short quotations, cameos of personal experiences, and excerpts from folk music and literature. Well-known occurrences, such as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, the Trail of Tears, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Japanese internment are included. Students may be surprised by some of the revelations, but will recognize a constant thread of rampant racism. The author concludes with a summary of today's changing economic climate and offers Rodney King's challenge to all of us to try to get along. Students will find this overview to be an accessible, cogent jumping-off place for American history and political science assignments, plus a guide to the myriad other sources identified in the notes.

In his new work, Takaki ( Strangers from a Different Shore , LJ 7/89; Iron Cages , LJ 3/1/80) calls for "a more inclusive and accurate history of all the peoples of America." But the book is limited to accounts of Native Americans, Africans, Irish, Mexicans, Chinese, Japanese, and Eastern European Jews, prefaced with a discussion of English settlers in the 17th century. Even within these limits, this book is not the "story of multidimensional ethnic interaction" that the author desires. Beyond victimization, few common themes emerge. Still, the book is useful, notwithstanding the author's sometimes questionable generalizations, oversimplifications, and fuzzy chronology. Not even seasoned historians will be knowledgeable about all the groups included. Takaki fails to show us how to reunite American history, but he provides in one volume a very readable version of some lesser-known parts. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 2/15/93.

Insightful and revealing descriptive studies of the history of multicultural people in America

I Read Ronald Takaki A Different Mirror for a graduate class in social work. This is an excellent historical studies of many of the multicultural in American that covers slavery, Native American removal from their land to the reservations and history, Irish immigrants as the lower white class, occupation of Mexico, Asians immigration to California and workforce, migrant workers, the story of the sweat shops and garment workers, the Chicano border crossing, Urban blacks, and Nazisms. The book is very descriptive of the struggles and hardships, and people who arrived in America with a dream, and the Native American loosing their way of life and home land This book is very insightful book and one worth keeping.

Such an amazing and excellent book. I'm so happy to read a history book from a non-European perspective. It gives so much detail and to the contributions of minorities in America. I feel like more people should be reading this book because people of all nationalities and backgrounds have contributed something great to the creation of America.

The hardback is the old version while the paperback is the newer edition

While I enjoyed the book greatly, beware of what format you are buying! This hardback version is an older version of the book and I needed the newest edition which is the paperback copy. That is why the hardback version is cheaper. The book is a great read, but I wish it was more clear indicating what version it was.

A Book For Every Teacher: Teaching English Language Learners is packed full of valuable information for all teachers of ELL's. This book is beneficial for teachers with a wide spectrum of experience working with ELL's. Not only does this book include the necessary terminology but it also includes strategies that can be used on a daily basis to improve ELL student outcomes. The information provided in this book allows teachers to gain a better understanding of the techniques that positively influence the field of education. Don't pass up this extremely informative and enjoyable text.

Highly Recommended

I not only found 'A Book for Every Teacher' informational, I found it to be an enjoyable read. The book gave many helpful tips on how to better reach my ELL students. I have students in my class that do not receive extra help from an ESOL teacher, therefore, I have to make the necessary adjustments in my classroom. My lower level students also benefit from some of the changes that I have made. I recommend this book to all teachers, regardless if they do not have an ELL student in their classroom this year.

A Much Needed Book!

I would highly recommend this book. The outline of the content is great and easy to follow. Chapter 3 discuss teaching ELLs in the classroom. It give great strategies to use such as Using Visual Aids like pictures, images, and graphic organizers. It also mentions relating existing knowledge, presenting contextual information, and making use of technology as other great strategies. This book is the perfect read for any teacher with ELL students.
