About the Author

Lynn Cannon, M.Ed., is a special education coordinator at the Ivymount School. She is responsible for helping to develop and oversee the social learning and academic curriculum for the lower and middle school students at Ivymount School. Ms. Cannon is the director of Take2 Summer Camp, a program designed to develop interaction skills and social thinking in children ages 8–12. Prior to her work at Ivymount School Lynn was a classroom teacher at the Lab School of Washington, in Washington DC. Ms. Cannon has been a major contributor to the development of the intervention. She has led all of the data collection, the implementation of the intervention and the training of the teachers in the pilot feasibility and development trial.

Lauren Kenworthy is the Director of the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders at Children's National Medical Center and is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Neurology, The George Washington University Medical School. She has specialized in the neuropsychological assessment of children with social learning disorders and executive dysfunction for over 15 years. In addition, Dr. Kenworthy has published over 20 peer reviewed papers investigating autism and executive function, as well as developing the most widely used assessment tool in the field, the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF; Gioia, Isquith, Guy, & Kenworthy, 2000).

For over 10 years, Katie C. Alexander has dedicated her work to serving individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), their families, and the professionals who support them. Katie is an occupational therapist who has conducted research on cognitive behavioral intervention for adolescents with Asperger's Disorder and has provided trainings and presentations both nationally and at the state level. Recently, Katie served as the founding program director for the Model Asperger Program at Ivymount School (MAP), where she led the development and implementation of a model, evidence-based educational programming, including intervention targeting social competency, positive behavior supports, and executive function. Katie has since authored two textbook chapters and continues to develop programming for individuals with ASD and participate in the research collaboration between the Ivymount School and Children's National Medical Center.

Monica Adler Werner, M.S., is the Director of the Model Asperger Program (MAP) at the Ivymount School. In that capacity she has spearheaded the development of a social learning curriculum that emphasizes problem solving, self advocacy and self regulation. Ms Werner has been a major contributor to the development of the intervention. In addition, she is a co-founder of Take2 Summer Camp, a program designed to develop social thinking, problem solving and skills. She also serves as an ad hoc public reviewer of NIMH autism grants.

Dr. Laura Anthony is a clinical and developmental psychologist at the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders at Children's National Medical Center and an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Pediatrics, Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) at the George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences (GWU). She leads the intervention program at the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders, an active interdisciplinary evaluation, treatment, research and training clinic. Dr. Anthony has expertise in developing clinical interventions and over 20 years of extensive experience in studying and treating behavioral rigidities (executive dysfunction) and stereotyped behaviors in children with developmental disorders. In addition, she and Dr. Kenworthy were awarded an ASD supplement to CNMC's Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disorders program to provide interdisciplinary training in the evaluation, treatment and research with children with ASD.

I don't like this for home use. I have an autistic son and this is more like a textbook to be used in a classroom. I see little use for it at the home. It should be specified that this is a classroom teaching aid.

Concrete, practical, thorough and consistent

Cute rhyming book

We checked this book out from the library when my daughter was about 18 mos old. She loved it so much, we had to buy it. We got to the point where I had memorized the entire book, and when she would get fussy in the car, I would recite it to her. Very cute, and the "meanies" never scared her...we thought they were funny...they all smile and giggle.

very cute rhyming book that young toddlers will love. If you can purchase this book your 2 to 6 year old will love it. I purchased after my 2 year granddaughter took it from the library and had me read it every day, 5 times a day for the 2 weeks she had it.

Good - but meanies are a bit creepy

We love all the Ms. Wishy-washy books, and wish there were more titles. I must say, however, this is our least favorite title because the "meanies" in this book. These creatures are a bit too creepy looking. Perhaps others will disagree, but with bad teeth, red noses and bones in their hair they seemed the stuff nightmares - even for an adult.

My review - 28 years a bachelor

Having read an earlier book, ‘The Temple is not my father’ by the same author, Rasana Atreya, I was intrigued when I heard the next book was ‘28 years a bachelor’ (I loved the title)
The opening of the book with a brief synopsis reminds one of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice where, she talks about universally accepted truth!
Madhav , the well educated South Indian male, 28 years old is the said bachelor, from the title. Though he loves his parents, his heart pulls him towards his paternal grandparents, tataiyya and nainamma living peacefully in a village ancestral home.

Then there is Jaya, Madhav’s younger sister, Syamala the long haired dusky beauty who is Madhav’s sweetheart and other characters like Devika, Murthy garu and others who complete the story.

Madhav proves he is not a spineless, city-bred boy, when he stands by his widowed sister or when he follows his heart to marry the girl of his choice, rejecting any dowry, even if it meant making his parents unhappy.

The lovely village environment, the ‘wacky’ tataiyya and ‘caustic’ nainamma (referred so by the author herself) are a treat to read. I found myself loving tataiyya the most.

With decent doses of Telugu sprinkled throughout, the story had a native touch. (Telugu being my mother tongue, I enjoyed reading it)
The subtle humour made me smile at places.
Some of the characters are relatable, like say Madhav’s mother, who couldn’t forgive her son, even after many years, for having rejected her suggestion to marry a rich girl with a huge dowry.

What I like:
As I read the earlier book I had a feeling that the story would surely tackle one social issue or the other. Here, the issues turn out to be, child marriages, early widowhood and dowry along with dusky girl misconception.
I loved the character of Madhav and I only wish there were more men like him!

Marriage in India - a subject under change

I liked this story of marriage and caste and villages in india, a country I've always had a fond spot for. The writer made the customs - wives going to live with their in-laws to take care of them, dowries and their problems, arranged marriages and their pros and cons, very understandable by the way she wove in the people whose lives are dominated by these customs. The writer had a good sense of description, and the book was easy to read.

It did seem that there is a vast social pressure to conform to some of these customs, and that women in particular often have a hard time with them. I can only see this from the outside. The author had several instances of showing how the courage of individuals could make such a huge difference in the fates of those subjected to the limitations by the imperatives of living in a country with such deep traditions.

The only thing I really thought wasn't done quite as well as the rest was a sense of hurrying the end so as to close up all the stories far into the future. I think that part might have worked better as an epilogue, as it sped up time when I was getting ready to finish the story of the present, and took consequences out into the future.

A fast-paced, engaging read.

28 Years a Bachelor is a good, fast-paced read, with wonderfully detailed settings and interesting characters. The novel's main protagonist, Madhav, is a simple young man, conflicted about his priorities in life, and torn between following his heart and doing his duty. The easy, irreverent banter he shares with his eminently likeable grandparents is refreshing and one of the highlights of the story.
This novel, too, like the author's previous ones, touches upon social evils such as dowry, female infanticide, child marriage, and the plight of widows. While certain social stereotypes are reinforced, yet others are eloquently turned on their head, with Madhav's "old-fashioned" grandparents proving to be far more liberal and open-minded in their outlook than his "modern" parents. Through it all, the story manages to maintain a light and humorous tone that serves to underline the hard-hitting sections rather than undermine them.
In all, this is a story that remains with the reader long after it is read.

A Great Teaching Resource...

"Criminology", co-authored by Leonard Glick and J. Mitchell Miller, is a comprehensive and well-written entry-level guide to the complex and controversial topic of criminology as practiced in the United States. "Criminology" is specifically organized to facilitate the work of the instructor and the student.

Each of fourteen chapters covers basic definitions, theory, and observed behavior for some category of criminal activity and/or the police, judicial, and correctional response. The basic text presents narrative, graphics, and focused text boxes, augmented by excerpts from a variety of authors with more indepth analysis of various problems. Each chapter comes with self-testing questions to reinforce learning. The layout of each chapter easily translates to a classroom presentation.

Presentation for the most part is even-handed, in recognition that criminology does not have perfect analyses or answers for what is very complex human behavior. Multiple theories of criminology are presented without predetermined selection of a single answer. Contrasting arguments for and against incarceration, capital punishment, and punitive sentences for drug-related offenses provide a good basis for further exploration in a classroom or seminar environment. The focus is on the United States, although some anecdotal context is provided for other nations. The text has been updated to include consideration of crimes of recent or renewed emphasis such as international terrorism and human trafficking.

"Criminology" is very highly recommended as a great teaching resource for college entry-level criminology classes.

I needed this book for class, but didn't want to pay the hefty price tag attached to it. So I ended up buying used on Amazon for the first time. I saved well over $100 doing this. The book was in great condition. No pen marks or highlights. Definitely recommend!! I cant tell enough people how much money you save when you use Amazon as an alternative for buying and renting textbooks.

Too many mistakes

This book has an extraordinary number of errors. The synthesis of methamphetamine (scourge of the west) is described according to a method used by bikers in the seventies. Rape is defined as forcible sex between a man and a woman. One of the causes of violence is a high sugar diet. Feminism can lead to violence. Descriptions of criminal law are weak and full of errors. This is a bad book.
