Fine hiking guide but not updated for 10 years

We used an older edition and thought this was more updated. However, while it was the last edition, it was ten years old and, with all the changes in Sedona and improvements to the trails (along with new ones...) it was a bit dated. Other than that, it is still an excellent hiking guide. We were just disappointed that it wasn't more up to date.

WE WERE MEANT FOR EACH OTHER. None of us are fully equipped to excel in life. Our weaknesses, blind spots, limited capabilities, and lack of experience all point to one thing-interdependence. Which is why connecting with others plays such an indispensable role in healthy development. Having access to the wisdom, experience, vision, and direction of those who have gone before can put you years ahead of where you’d be on your own. And, in addition to enhancing you own potential in all of life’s growth areas (spiritual, emotional, professional, relational, etc.), the things you’ll discover will equip you to help others as well. So why don’t we place more of a priority on developing these essential, empowering relationships? Are we uneasy with the vulnerability, assuming it will be perceived as weakness? Do we hesitate to ask, not wanting to impose on anyone else’s busy schedule? Are we reluctant to provide guidance for others, not wanting to come across as proud or self-important? Each of these factors can play a part, of course. But the main reason we miss out, according to Stanley and Clinton, is that we simply don’t understand the true nature of mentoring-a problem that is easily overcome.

About the Author
Dr. J. Robert (Bobby) Clinton is Professor of Leadership at the School of Intercultural Studies of Fuller Theological Seminary. He has coordinated the leadership concentration in the School of Intercultural Studies for more than 25 years. Bobby models and teaches the concepts of lifelong development and of the focused life, as well as the importance of mentoring to develop leaders. Before coming to Fuller, he and his wife, Marilyn, served as missionaries for Worldteam in Jamaica. His writings, besides the leadership commentary series, include numerous biblical examples of leadership development. His publications include: The Making of A Leader; Leadership Emergence Theory; Connecting—Mentoring Relationships; The Mentor Handbook; Focused Lives; Strategic Concepts— That Clarify a Focused Life; and Having a Ministry That Lasts—By Becoming a Bible Centered Leader. His major focus in writing and teaching now is to help leaders inform their leadership from the Bible.

Dr. Clinton has studied each of the books of the Bible from a leadership perspective. His book, The Bible and Leadership Values, contains that initial research on the Bible. From this study he has selected the top 25 books that contribute much to leadership thought. For each book of his Biblical Leadership Commentary Series, Dr. Clinton comments on the text from a leadership standpoint. He defines leadership concepts, which shed light on the leadership implications in the text. Further, Dr. Clinton writes short leadership articles, which further suggest the importance of Biblical insights for leadership. Fourteen leadership commentaries have been completed to date: Jonah, Nehemiah, Haggai, Obadiah, Daniel, John, 1,2 Corinthians, Philippians, Titus, 1,2 Timothy, 1, 2 Timothy.

About the Author
Dr. Joseph, George started his research career as a Cosmic Ray Scientist at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Bombay. He has been at the Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad since 1973, where he was instrumental in developing a variety of electro-optical sensors for earth observations which were the first of their kind in India. During 1998-2003, as Satish Dhawan Distinguished Professor, Dr Joseph was engaged in studies related to various aspects of remote sensing technology and its applications. He has actively contributed in shaping and guiding the long-term remote sensing programmes of ISRO. Dr Joseph is a Fellow of a number of academies and professional bodies and is a recipient of several awards, including the Padma Bhushan in 1999 for his contributions to remote sensing activities in India.

Sound, sensible advice on the practice of prayer

As one who recives spiritual direction, I am constantly on the lookout for books that make sense of a discipline that can all too easily be shrouded in a fog of verbiage. This is one of the very few books that fits the bill; it speaks to the reader directly, in simple, straightforward prose, and its content speaks directly to the spiritual needs of beginners in meditation like me. In particular, the chapters on "How to Meditate" and "Temperament and Mentl Prayer" were especially helpful. All in all, this is the best introductory manual on the practice of prayer that I have seen since Anthony Bloom's "Beginning to Pray."

Powerful Reading

This slender but powerful volume is divided into two fifty-page essays. The first discusses spiritual direction and is aimed mainly at the religious; the second covers the practice of meditation and speaks more to the lay reader.
Merton's commentary on direction is incisive as always. He has a nasty habit of confronting me with my human weaknesses just when I think I've made a little spiritual progress. My spirituality must not be compartmentalized, it must encompass my every thought and action: holiness is not simply a matter of going to church every Sunday, it's how I brush my teeth. Further, my spiritual life must not become enslaved to form; it is all about substance. If the essence of my being is committed to the Holy Spirit, if love for God infuses my every thought and action, I will discern my vocation and conduct my life in harmony with His will. Certainly, a lay person may need guidance in this discernment, but for a religious, whose vocation is spiritual "perfection", it is imperative. Without proper guidance, and a lot of it, proper formation is impossible and the result is often a lost soul. Merton explains what a spiritual director should be, and perhaps more important, what he should not be. Very few of us can discern God's will in solitude-most of us need to talk things out, even if, as Merton points out, it is only a matter of hearing confirmation of what we already know in our heart.
Merton's commentary on meditation includes everything from explaining the true goal of meditation (union with God) to teaching the basics (e.g., it's best to meditate when seated). His primer is must reading for anyone interested in meditation, or anyone wishing to improve his/her prayer life in general.

"Spiritual Direction" and "Meditation" have become spiritual buzz words these days. So many books teach the novice how to go about sitting, breathing, visualizing, etc. Merton cuts through the chase and offers a helpful guide to the Christian who really wants to grow through the cultivation of the inner life. But why shouldn't he? Merton's books were teaching generations truths about the contemplative life before the buzz words started to buzz. This short, easy to read book is a joy to recommend.

This book is an excellent resource for someone thinking about adding powerlifting training into their regimen to enhanced their fitness or athletic goals. Really enjoyed the inspiring testimonials scattered throughout the book, they are a great source of motivation for anyone and really bring to light how the 3 powerlifts can change lives. Coach Gaglione really knows what he's talking about; it's great to see him put something out that shows the large umbrella of benefits to powerlifting that go far beyond what most people think of the sport. Everyone from division 1 athletes to the middle aged soccer mom can benefit from building strength and power through powerlifting and Gaglione does a great job of showing that.

It shows how powerlifting is not just for men and not just for someone who already has lifting experience.
