Fantastic resource for EVERY clinician

I have been a palliative care physician for 5 years now, and I was amazed at how much this book taught me. I appreciate its straightforward language and found that I was learning new communication techniques from the very first page (yes, really!). I think this book is a great resource for any clinician regardless of their level of expertise, experience, or training. From the novice to the expert - from medical student to attending physician - and for every discipline - this book should be required reading for anyone who deals with patients with serious illness and their families.

Highly recommended

I was fortunate enough to attend a communication skills training retreat with the authors and it changed the way I practice medicine. I was moved to write this review because the book so effectively distills their years of experience as clinicians and educators into a readable and practical format. It serves as an ideal refresher and reference for those who have taken part in their workshops. More importantly, though, the text is accessible enough that it could be used by anyone of any discipline who deals with seriously ill patients, even if you never thought of communication skills as something that could be taught! Written in the style of "Difficult Conversations" and "Getting to Yes" the authors have structured the book to make it a quick, high yield read. They use tables to highlight "what happened" in a conversation and "what we can learn" then end each section with "the bottom line" and a few tips to help you in "maximizing your learning." This material made me a much better communicator which has not only helped my patients but has also made my practice infinitely more fulfilling. This book offers the same opportunity to anyone who reads it which I find very exciting for the future of medicine. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

What all Physicians should read during training . . . and after.

Communicating serious news and dealing with end-of-life issues are poorly taught in medical school, but something that is constantly present in practice. This book is a quick read, but a great resource in how to have those discussions go well. As we are constantly dealing with death, we easily forget how new, personal and foreign a serious situation is to the individual patient we see. This book walks through discussions about breaking serious news, giving a prognosis, to discussing code status while being mindful of where the patient is at. I can't advocate this enough as needing to be a book in every doctor's library.

Linenger's very personal writing style draws the reader into the story quickly, breezing through his childhood, Annapolis training, medical school, and selection as an astronaut, then moving quickly to the Mir assignment and its aftermath.

Linenger isn't shy about sharing his opinions. 'Off The Planet: Surviving Five Perilous Months Aboard the Space Station Mir' by Jerry M. Linenger is one of the most readable. Off the Planet sheds new light on such present developments as the Russians' determination to continue the Mir after their repeated commitments to abandon it, combined with their commitments to the International Space Station. The book makes one think that perhaps the United States would be better off partnering in space with, say, Somalia or Lower Slobovia. Russian Psychologist, cure thyself and thy kindred. But he paid a high price for these distinctions. Inside, Mir was as mess, and several power failures lefts its inhabitants in total darkness. Worst of all, Linenger reports, was the lack of professionalism among their Russian handlers. "Mission control in Moscow became our enemy rather than our friend." he writes, "our nemesis rather than our support structure." Mission control threatened to cut the Russian astronauts pay if they performed poorly, and dangled bonuses for doing well. A Great Glimpse of Life in Space

This book is easy to read and has lots of good pictures, so when I first thumbed through the pages I thought it was going to be another PR job for NASA. Much to my delight, when I actually "dug in" I discovered an original, candid and insightful discussion of US-Russian collaboration and of the author's experiences on Mir. Sure, Linenger comes off as a "right stuff" astronaut: after all, you can't earn a series of degrees and succeed as a military officer, as a physician, and a spacefarer unless you have outstanding qualifications and high self confidence. Despite the author's occasionally overbearing "can do" mentality, Linenger offers a balanced view of life aboard an aging Space Station. It is full of useful but usually tasteful detail on how people survive psychologically and relate to one another under prolonged isolation and confinement. The stories are interesting, and in the telling Linenger gives us insights into everything from interpersonal to international relations. I finished this book reminded that living and working in space is a complex, multifaceted endeavor that defies simple analysis. Dr. Linenger's book not only entertains, it increases our understanding of people in exotic and stressful environments. I have read at least two other major books about life on Mir, and still found this one engaging and informative.

A Fine Astronaut Memoir of the Strife-Filled Shuttle-Mir Program of the Mid-1990s

During the middle part of the 1990s NASA and the Russian Space Agency engaged in a set of cooperative missions that resulted in nine Space Shuttle-Mir link ups between 1995 and 1998, including rendezvous, docking, and crew transfers. Jerry Linenger was one of the NASA astronauts sent to fly on Mir, serving there between January 12 and May 15, 1997. This book recounts his experiences training for this mission, including the difficult time he spent at the Cosmonaut training facility at Star City, as well as the mission itself. As he noted about the Russians at Star City, "the goal of helping cosmonauts and astronauts better prepare for a mission was not a shared goal. Making money off the Americans seemed to be the overriding consideration" (p. 43).

A centerpiece of this book is the exceptionally difficult crises on Mir while Linenger was aboard. The first took place on February 24, 1997, when Linenger and his fellow crewmembers fought a fire caused when an oxygen generator in Kvant 1 malfunctioned and ignited. While the fire burned for only about ninety seconds, the crew was exposed to heavy smoke for five to seven minutes and donned masks in response. Linenger had been in the Spektr module working on his computer when he heard Mir's master alarm go off. He shut down his computer--in case the power should go off--put on some protective gear, and rushed as best he could in his weightless condition to the scene of the accident. They all realized that the fire was serious, it could jeopardize the station and their lives, for it blocked access to one of the Soyuz spacecraft needed for return to Earth. Crewmembers extinguished the fire with foam from three fire extinguishers, each containing two liters of a water-based liquid. The fire was not small. Burning in all directions in the microgravity of the space station, the oxygen from the generator fueled hydra-like flames up to three feet long. Periodically, said Linenger, bits of molten metal from the oxygen generator went splattered the bulkhead. Once the fire had been contained they started purging the atmosphere of the smoke, and Linenger, a physician, examined the other members of the crew to ensure they had not been injured. The crew wore masks and goggles until an analysis of the Mir atmosphere ensured that they experienced no serious health risk.

The fire foreshadowed a series of problems aboard Mir during the spring and summer of 1997. Oxygen generators broke down, the automatic docking system malfunctioned, various types of equipment both great and small interrupted the normally monotonous activities, the station's orientation system broke down, the power system failed when the solar arrays lost their position toward the Sun, and leaks in the Kvant-2 cooling system forced numerous repairs and seemingly endless fussing to keep it running. It appeared that the Mir crew, including Linenger, spent the majority of their days repairing the space station. They gingerly positioned Mir in relation to the Sun so that they could control temperature on various parts of the station. The environment on Mir was uncomfortable, and the crew complained about it.

Linenger believed that Russian mission control failed to inform the crew about the status of their station. He expressed nothing but praise for his fellow crewmembers for their strength and perseverance throughout the mission. Even with communication difficulties, a cloud of doubt surrounding the station's systems, difficulties with mission control, and fires and toxic fumes, the crew worked relatively well under very difficult circumstances.

Linenger tells his story with verve and style, and not a little humor, but that that barely hides a cynicism aboiut the whole effort. He concluded, "That the shuttle Mir program is primarily a political rather than a technical endeavor is obvious to anyone working on it or familiar with it" (p. 113). He also notes that the Shuttle/Mir program was essentially a form of foreign aid by the Clinton administration to Russia using NASA's space exploration money rather than funds appropriated through the various foreign aid programs of the United States. He concluded: "the U.S. government perceived that engaging the Russians in a cooperative space undertaking was reason enough to stick by Mir. Or perhaps having a means for our government to funnel millions of dollars in foreign aid to Russia under the guise of `rent money' so the United States can send astronauts to Mir is a valuable political stratagem" (p. 248).

In many ways this is a fascinating book, pulling back the curtain on the Shuttle/Mir cooperative program between the U.S. and Russia in the mid-1990s.

A personal account

I well remember the morning of 18 September 1999, my son's 10th birthday, when I took him outside in the early morning for a splendid pass directly overhead by Mir. I have never seen before or since a better pass - right over the house. I waved up and tried to kid my kid that I'd arranged the deal just for him.
I've read Foale's book, I've read Dragonfly, and I've read a few other accounts of life aboard the dilapidated Mir space station. Jerry's account is a personal one, and like any other astronaut he talks about himself and his experience, but he also gives a good picture of conditions aboard and the tensions between crew members and ground control. It must have been a very challenging environment in a spacecraft filled with garbage and outdated equipment, requiring constant attention, in a space program kept aloft by political commitments rather than any real scientific need.
It is good to read Jerry's side of the story and to see how he dealt with the inefficiencies, the corruption and the constant malfunctions of the program. We haven't heard the last of Mir just yet, and I look forward to seeing an increasingly complete account of the flights coming out over the years to come.
I'll agree that Dragonfly is the more balanced account, a real eye-opener in its own right, but Jerry Linenger's account fills a gap in the story, and I can recommend it to any space junkie wanting a fix.

About the Author

Vaughan Evans has been a strategy consultant since the mid-1980s, working with a broad range of corporate clients, from small firms to global giants, and with over 50 financier clients, both structured lenders and private equity. For the last ten years he has been independent, specialising in business strategy, business planning and strategic due diligence. Vaughan is a graduate of Downing College, Cambridge and a Sloan Fellow with distinction of London Business School. He has written four previous books including the bestseller The Financial Times Essential Guide to Writing a Business Plan.

A collection of models and a handbook

This is a collection of strategy models like Porter's 5 Forces or the BCG Matrix but it's more than that. The author has written a strategy handbook on how to use these models as practical tools. Strategy models are a diverse bunch and they relate to anything from how to set up a distribution chain, to employee knowledge management, to competitive positioning to... well as I said, almost anything. Vaughn Evans, a management consultant and former banker and economist, presents a framework that puts each tool in a natural context. This framework is in itself an excellent tool that displays how various strategy niches fit together. To me this framework is actually one of the main contributions of the book. True, some of the tools presented to a certain extent have to be squeezed into one of the niches, but that's easily forgiven.

This framework is not only a categorization but also a step by step manual for how to develop a coherent corporate strategy. The only issues hindering this book from being the CEO's one stop shop are the lack of advice on strategy implementation/execution and also of more mundane lower level tools concerning procurement, production, distribution etc. No matter, the new CEO at least got half of his job covered by Evans text.

As the chapters progress and follow the framework the author at times arrives at necessary tasks related to forming a strategy that has not been covered by a fancy matrix from Michael Porter, McKinsey or Peters & Waterman. Instead of jumping to the next task Evens simply writes a short text on the job at hand, calls it a tool and moves on. Even if some of Evans 88 strategy tools are more to be characterized as concepts such as DCFs, tipping points, Taleb's Black Swan, price elasticity etc. that the author thinks the corporate manager should know of and use, the fact that no step in the process are skipped makes it possible to build a strategy from the text. Evans also contributes a couple of "proper" tools of himself of which I will use the Suns and Clouds chart frequently in the future.

Despite the pocket book like appearance this book contains 339 rather packed pages and since every tool is summarized the text is rather fact rich. This could be a heavy text if the writing hadn't been so fluent, at times helped by small pinches of dry humour. The framing of the models also make the reading easier and for those who don't want to dwell too much on alternative models Evans has picked out those he thinks are the most important ones to use at each step of the strategy formulation. If I could have wished for something more it would have been more pointed tips for further reading. As it is now there are references presented for each rather long chapter and it's not always clear which of these books if any that relate to the tool you wanted to study further.

It's hard to pick out favourites out of all the models presented. However, the manual for corporate acquisitions is simple but excellent. If all those involved in M&A historically had followed it serious amounts of shareholders money would have been saved. I also appreciated a trio of connected tools called Customer Purchasing Criteria, Key Success Factors and Rating Competitive Position. Here you first identify what customers need from a product (the CPCs), then what a company and its competitors has to do to deliver the CPC (i.e. the KSFs) and lastly you weigh the KSFs according to their importance and rank all the relevant competitors on how they fulfil them. This gives a highly revealing picture of the competitive position of a company. I also feel I have to read more about the Blue Ocean strategy.

On top of getting a reference toolbox of strategy models and a manual for strategy formulation those who read the book cover to cover also receive a useful crash course on the history of strategy and management theories. This book will be the first one I return to whenever a task of strategic nature has to be handled.

COMPLETE, THOROUGH, USEFUL & ENJOYABLE

Complete, thorough, useful AND enjoyable
so you will read it and you will find what you need and you will actually apply it. As manager or entrepreneur you must develop and improve your business strategy and, important, communicate it a convincing manner, whether to funders or employees. Contemplate the normative banana (Evans has drawn widely on the classic work in the field, drawn out its relevance today, and added his own analysis and tools, for example on sizing the market through market crafting) and see whether, say, the resolute Five Forces or the rather more iffy SWOT analyses are for you (all tools get the How to use it; When to use it; When to be wary treatment). Examples from businesses you know about, be they long-established like RBS, recent, but also with problems today, like Facebook, or old and small, like The Beatles (only four of them, remember).
Evans takes you lightly through it all, and wishes you good luck at the end. So, follow the Strategy Pyramid. Read the book, peruse and apply, and increase your chances that fortune will smile on you!

Vaughan Evans really delivers in his latest book on corporate strategy. As a manager or business leader, being asked to articulate a strategy for your company's future can be likened to fumbling for the light switch in the dark. You know the right tool is within reach -- but where? As the author point out, a strategy that will truly serve its purpose requires both an overall process and a toolkit. Evans cites Michael Porter in observing that "the company without a strategy is willing to try anything" and isn't that true in our more desperate moments of uncertainty?

This compendium is well-researched, and -- importantly -- lovingly cited. Evans takes your understanding to the next level; Porter's classic 'Five Forces' is explained in pitch-perfect shorthand, but then the author makes it immediately real by profiling the fairly recent demise of our beloved Woolworths, once so affectionately held, but no more.

In this book, Evans pre-digests the body of relevant academic research and succesfully avoids the 'overwhelm' so common in other works. He also puts known research into context; in the case of Porter's work, Evans aptly explains the developing narratives of a 'Sixth Force', briefly presenting it for your consideration.

Complete with case examples from companies you will know and identify with, the process of setting goals and objectives inherent to strategy are brought to life. In addition to the task of profiling your "ideal player", you are invited to be mindful of more emergent trends such as 'corporate social responsiblity' and social phenomena such as was explored in Gladwell's 'The Tipping Point' and Maslow's 'hierarchy of needs'.

From a refresher on the author's own 'Suns and Clouds' risk-assessment tool to a fond and well-deserved introduction to visionary Dr Charles Handy (who was the author's lecturer many years ago) you're going to enjoy this whistle-stop tour of exactly what you need to know if you're in the dark. You'll not be inclined to dig out those 27 academic books that are gathering dust in the spare room -- it's all here in one place.

Clear out a few shelves on your bookcase -- this is the one volume that's a genuine keeper when you just need to know what to do, and get on with it.

About the Author
Randy Leffingwell wrote his first book, American Muscle, in 1989 while still on staff at the Los Angeles Times. Since then, he has authored another 47 titles for Motorbooks and sister publisher Voyageur Press, including his most recent Complete Book of Porsche 911 and Corvette 60 Years.He has just finished Porsche 911: Fifty Years, a reexamination of the 911 story based on nearly two dozen new interviews. He lives in southern California, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles.

Excellent photo history, great looking coffee table book

I really enjoy this book. It looks great, it reads great, and it's chock full of good information about the tractors, but also about the business and its history.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves John Deere machinery, but also wants to know more about the company's history in the tractor business.

Distinguishing features of this text:

Student-Friendly Conceptual Framework. The book is organized around a conceptual framework that contrasts democracy with the administrative state or “fourth branch of government” (significant policy making by insulated technocrats and bureaucrats).

Illustrative Cases. Each chapter begins with a scenario, or case in point, presented somewhat polemically, to pique the students' interest. These cases demonstrate the central point of the chapter, and, often, the student is referred back to that case to illustrate concepts throughout the chapter.

More Case Content. In contrast to other texts that use cases, this book includes more cases and more of each case so students can better grasp what led to the lawsuit and how the Court resolved it. In addition to the introductory case in point, the book presents cases throughout each chapter and chapters end with several more cases relevant to the chapter material. The cases in the middle of chapters tend to be “classics,” whereas the cases ending each chapter represent more recent decisions on the same points of law.

Summary of Doctrines. Each chapter includes a summary of administrative law doctrines, legal principles, and constitutional tests that students have gleaned from the cases presented in the chapter and that they should be able to apply to the end-of-chapter cases or to hypothetical cases.

Pedagogical Design. The book is designed to be compatible with a problem-solving pedagogical approach. Questions at the end of cases query students' understanding of doctrines, principles, and constitutional tests and whether the court applied those doctrines, principles, and tests; modified them; or ignored them. Also, the summary at the end of each chapter is compatible with a pedagogical approach that uses testing by hypothetical cases and requires students to outline. Case text from the courts is presented in a double-column format, which should make for easy reference to specific cases.

About the Author

Steven J. Cann is a Full Professor, Prelaw Coordinator and Former Chairman of the Department of Political Science, at Washburn University of Topeka, Kansas. He has published in the area of substantive constitutional law, primarily in civil liberties. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Purdue University in 1977. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Kansas Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (Ks. ASPA). He served as the President of Ks. ASPA from 1999-2000. Dr. Cann has been certified as an expert witness in Kansas District Court. He is a three-time nominee for Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

Like the ESPN highlights of Administrative Law

This book was mandatory read for my Public Administration study. Unlike many of the Public Administration/Policy snoozer Text, this one is actually readable and well-worth its weight in gold. In it you'll find cascades of judicial case study on rulings that's shaped the Democracy and Bureaucracy of the United States. Administrative Law provides the reader with highlights into the thought processes (prevailing and dissenting opinions) behind the most relevant Judicial rulings (Supreme, District, Appellate, etc...) that affect our everyday lives as citizens. Equally as important, the Author presents the format in an extremely organized, easy-to-follow, easy-to-understand format for us non-lawyerly-type. I'm compelled to write a review for this book because it's one of the few Textbooks that's profoundly influenced my path in Public Service and provided me with a better understanding and appreciation for the nuts-and-bolts that make our Nation great. The one complaint I do have for the book -and for all Textbooks for that matter- is that it's quite heavy and difficult to lug around in a paperback/magazine-like fashion. In the not-so-distant future, I look forward to buying this reference Text in E-book format.

Amazing

I received the book the day after I ordered it for a nominal delivery charge. The book was just what I needed for class, and it turned out to be the most important class I will take for my degree (at least IMHO). The spine was a bit loose and I found, oh the horror, a page with pink highlighter marks. All in all, I'm happy.
