not as good as I hoped

There are two things I like about this Bible:
1. The NKJV text is written out in paragraph form instead of each verse starting on a new line. I really like this, as I like the NKJV translation but find the way it is formatted in regular Bibles distracting.

2. Unlike some chronological Bibles, this one includes the entire text of the Bible. When a story is duplicated in different books of the Bible, each version is included (usually one after the other, but not always).

The biggest drawback to this Bible is that the commentaries/articles are far less helpful and more distracting than I expected. I had thought that I would be able to just ignore them if I didn't like them, but there are so many of them, and they are placed very prominently (not in the margins like in some other study Bibles). I found that they continually drew my attention away from the Biblical text.

I began my reading with the gospels. I was interested to read them all combined and get what I thought would be fuller, clearer picture of Jesus' life. However, the commentaries were always pointing out "discrepancies" and explaining them from a what seemed to be a faithless perspective.

At first I thought maybe it was my own bias that made the commentaries seem to have an anti-Christian slant. So I continued to read, going next to Samuel/Kings/Chronicles. The commentaries there also had a secular slant, with a heavy focus on pagan religions. They seemed to be implying that the God of the Bible is no more real or true than any other. I tried to give the commentators the benefit of the doubt until I came across the phrase (in the commentary about King Uzziah) "Yahweh's Jerusalem cult." At that point, I decided to stop using this Bible.

Also, I found that reading the Bible chronologically didn't actually enhance my interest or understanding as I had expected it to. It still didn't read like a coherent story -- at least not in this particular version.

Oh -- one more tiny thing. Other reviewers had commented about the psalms being placed near the events they were written about, but it turns out that there are only a few psalms where this information is actually known. So what they did was lump chunks of psalms together topically. This was not helpful to me, so I usually ended up skipping over the psalms to get back to the narrative.

Be aware of several things before purchasing this....

I just received this Bible as a gift recently and I was initially delighted. However, I was almost immediately appalled to see that many of the comments in this "study Bible" have been heavily influenced by secular history and liberal scholars. It starts in the Genesis accounts at the beginning, which uses some secular history timelines that support the evolutionary record, or at least secular interpretations of so-called modern history. Rather than present alternative theories, the "time capsules" present their timelines as historical facts, leaving no room for literal interpretations of the clear genealogical timelines that are laid out in Genesis. There is only one mention that I could find of taking the genealogy accounts in Genesis literally, which places creation at about 4004 B.C. The notes in this Bible quickly dismiss this idea, which is disappointing. Another example that I read is in Esther in which the "scholars" point out problems with Esther from a historical view point. However, they then mention in later notes that Mordecai is mentioned in historical records, which seemingly contradicts their original point. I have not read through all the notes yet in this "study Bible", but I would strongly caution you against purchasing this if you take the Bible's history literally. The Bible has been proven to be the most reliable ancient source of history - more than any other document in the world, and secular views are consistently proven wrong when compared to the Bible, so why not trust it completely? As an alternative, consider buying "the Evidence Bible" or the "Defender's Bible" - both of which provide real factual evidence and don't rely so much on secular interpretations (see links below). Overall, there may be some helpful historical cross-references here, but sorting through the liberal and secular interpretations make this a disappointing purchase indeed and could lead people astray.

Absolutely fantastic work!!! I've been looking for a good chronologically formatted bible for a little while now but I also wanted a good study bible and this bible more than fit the bill. FOR THOSE WHO ARE LOOKING FOR A GREAT STUDY BIBLE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO LOOK UP SCRIPTURE USING THE STANDARD BOOK-CHAPTER-VERSE METHOD THIS BIBLE IS NOT FOR YOU because it isn't designed that way. Since it is laid out in chronological order the books are interspersed and blended together over the period of time pertinent to the discussion. By example, all prophetic writings of the same time and content regardless of the author are placed according to their relation in content, context and time. And in the same way when one reads the gospels as they're laid out in this book one is reading the gospels BLENDED TOGETHER in the same manner as described previously. So that at the completion of a discourse from one of the gospels the reader is presented with the correlating account from one of the other books of the gospels without having to turn to the other book separately.
As for the information contained in this book that is placed for the sake of educating the reader such as language and social customs- historical/archaeological findings- maps-diagrams-charts this book is only surpassed by a true master study bible which would set the reader back by anywhere from three to six times the cost of this book.
I would wholeheartedly and in good conscience strongly recommend this book for any reader of the bible from the casual reader to advanced student.

Excellent, well-written book on automotive wiring

I've read just about every automotive book on the bookstore shelves and this is one of the best. The information is accurate and well written, photos support the written material with good clear color shots, and the information is easy to understand. This is the only book I know of that goes into any level of detail concerning DMMs for automotive use and why you should use them instead of a traditional test light. It also contains very good details on proper use of relays including circuit protection with clamping diodes (if you dont know what that is you will after reading about them in this book). Fuses, fusible links, wire, grounding, harnesses, its all here.

Often when reading automotive books, I get the feeling that the author knows what they are talking about but does a poor job of putting it into words that the reader can understand. Other times, the author doesn't know what they are talking about or they are just outright wrong. This book is NOT an example of either of those. This author understands what he is talking about and knows how to explain it clearly.

If you purchased other automotive books and need one on wiring, you will be happy with this one. I am looking forward to a 2nd edition containing more projects. I'd love to see this author write a book on Engine Management (ECUs) with custom installations and tuning written in the same style as this book.

Too short!!

I'm extremely excited about the return of one of my favorite fantasy characters "Daven Carickson"..I'll have to admit that while I'm usually very objective in my overall assessment of fantasy novels (which I usually consume at around 3 novels a week) my excitement at getting to immerse myself once more in Daven's story may have influenced my personal rating.
If this book was meant to gauge the overall interest after the less than favorable feedback from "the dragonprince's heir" I enthusiastically submit my endorsement. This book reminded why I enjoyed Aaron's earlier work and ultimately feel in love with the dragonprince's trilogy. I'm ready for more!!

All I can say is this story was way too short. Would have loved another 300 pages. Novellas are good, but books that take me a few days to read are much better. I really enjoyed this installment of "What happened to Daven immediately after Book 2 of The Dragon Swarm". I know a few readers didnt care for Book 3 since it didnt pick up where Book 2 left off but this Novella does. Highly recommended reading after the first two books.

Loved the first two books of the drangonprince trilogy, am just starting the third, but read this first to continue with Daven's story, was short but i know there are another 4 short novellas to come in this section of the saga. So I look forward to more and I am going to read the Dragonprince's heir, the third of the proginal trilogy, with an open mind, despite the bad reviews, thanks to this book. Keep going!

"Dancing, he has always been the greatest," even though fellow members of Leningrad's Kirov Ballet, the author observes, called the teenaged Baryshnikovshort, stocky and quick"hockey puck." Few new facts emerge, but it is interesting to note that the dancer's film appearances began in 1971 with his debut in the Soviet-made Fiesta , in which he played a "handsome young matador . . . ready to meet his lonely fate." A "genius he was" at the barre, and although financial and artistic turmoil have rocked the American Ballet Theater periodically since Baryshnikov became artistic director in 1980, "Misha has learned about himself. He admits that he's moody and that when he's down he's intolerable, but he says he's working on it." This remains a celebrity portrait, never bursting the bubble of fame to find the man inside it. This biography of the great ballet dancer can therefore really only tell part of the "story." Two earlier books, Nina Alovert's Baryshnikov in Russia ( LJ 12/84) and Gennady Smakov's Baryshnikov: From Russia to the West ( LJ 4/15/81) have focused just on the dancer's early career.-- Ed.) The book relates important events in Baryshnikov's life--his experiences as a young dancer in Russia, and his dizzying number of U.S. dance and acting projects. Baryshnikov's personal side is presented, too, including his much publicized romantic liaisons and commitment to parenting. While the book has little new information or substantial journalistic reporting, it is, nevertheless, a serviceable and straightforward biography for the YA audience.

Throughout the theory is illustrated with many worked examples and numerous exercises (some with solutions) are provided.

Not all that simple for US undergrads

Really, I could give this book four stars on some points, like its introducing Lagrangian mechanics at an introductory level. And it isn't a bad book at all -- just that it is NOT for first year undergrads at US universities as it is for Europeans who tend to be ahead of us at this level. It uses vector calculus almost from the start, for example, and its problem sets are difficult compared to most problems in Serway and other standard first-year physics texts. However, as a supplement (if you want to spend $37 for a small book), it will likely give you more of an edge in the long run if you can figure it out.

A Deliciously Twisty Treat

In this spicy standalone, our leading lady is a restless wife with nine years of marriage under her sassily costumed belt. One fateful night, she gets more than she bargained for – or ever anticipated -- when she opens her door to a costumed visitor who's been watching her for longer than she could ever realize.

This gem of a page-turner is a wicked blend of erotica, adventure, and the idea that you never know what will happen when you open the proverbial door to the unexpected. As a reader, I also appreciated the fact that this is a complete story – no cliff-hangers, teases, or unresolved plot-lines. In fact, the story has an actual plot, which isn't always the case with these, ahem, "bedtime" stories for grownups.

Delicious dialogue, lots of spicy action, and an unexpected twist make this story a real treat.

Jesse Joren, omg woman, I absolutely love you! Can we be Best friends?? Lol. I have fallen in love with another cool author!! You had me fooled there! Man, you can write one dark erotica!! What can I say about: "All Mine!" Omg! You just don't understand how frickin "AMAZING" this book is. I absolutely love this book. LOVE IT! Had everything I loved in this book!! I won't ruin this beautifully dark read by divulging any details. Because it will give it all away... The only complaint I have is, "It's To Short!!" Jessica, needs more!! Lol.

We see how 17th-century white planters, anxious to weaken an armed, politicized, white proletariat, enslaved an unarmed black workforce, with explosive consequences. We follow Chicano struggles as an integral part of America's westward expansion and learn how Jewish-black solidarity extends back to John Brown's uprising in 1856 against slavery in Kansas, an insurrection in which Jews participated. We see how oppression of the Irish (the first people the English called "savages") foreshadowed the subjugation of Native Americans. YA-Takaki traces the economic and political history of Indians, African Americans, Mexicans, Japanese, Chinese, Irish, and Jewish people in America, with considerable attention given to instances and consequences of racism. The narrative is laced with short quotations, cameos of personal experiences, and excerpts from folk music and literature. Well-known occurrences, such as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, the Trail of Tears, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Japanese internment are included. Students may be surprised by some of the revelations, but will recognize a constant thread of rampant racism. The author concludes with a summary of today's changing economic climate and offers Rodney King's challenge to all of us to try to get along. Students will find this overview to be an accessible, cogent jumping-off place for American history and political science assignments, plus a guide to the myriad other sources identified in the notes.

In his new work, Takaki ( Strangers from a Different Shore , LJ 7/89; Iron Cages , LJ 3/1/80) calls for "a more inclusive and accurate history of all the peoples of America." But the book is limited to accounts of Native Americans, Africans, Irish, Mexicans, Chinese, Japanese, and Eastern European Jews, prefaced with a discussion of English settlers in the 17th century. Even within these limits, this book is not the "story of multidimensional ethnic interaction" that the author desires. Beyond victimization, few common themes emerge. Still, the book is useful, notwithstanding the author's sometimes questionable generalizations, oversimplifications, and fuzzy chronology. Not even seasoned historians will be knowledgeable about all the groups included. Takaki fails to show us how to reunite American history, but he provides in one volume a very readable version of some lesser-known parts. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 2/15/93.

Insightful and revealing descriptive studies of the history of multicultural people in America

I Read Ronald Takaki A Different Mirror for a graduate class in social work. This is an excellent historical studies of many of the multicultural in American that covers slavery, Native American removal from their land to the reservations and history, Irish immigrants as the lower white class, occupation of Mexico, Asians immigration to California and workforce, migrant workers, the story of the sweat shops and garment workers, the Chicano border crossing, Urban blacks, and Nazisms. The book is very descriptive of the struggles and hardships, and people who arrived in America with a dream, and the Native American loosing their way of life and home land This book is very insightful book and one worth keeping.

Such an amazing and excellent book. I'm so happy to read a history book from a non-European perspective. It gives so much detail and to the contributions of minorities in America. I feel like more people should be reading this book because people of all nationalities and backgrounds have contributed something great to the creation of America.

The hardback is the old version while the paperback is the newer edition

While I enjoyed the book greatly, beware of what format you are buying! This hardback version is an older version of the book and I needed the newest edition which is the paperback copy. That is why the hardback version is cheaper. The book is a great read, but I wish it was more clear indicating what version it was.

A Book for Every Teacher: Teaching English Language Learners is a unique and compressive text written for mainstream classroom teachers. The passion for writing this book comes from our working experiences with the K–12 teachers in four school districts through our Ell Center professional development program. Through this program, we provide professional training through our federally funded research and service projects. The purpose of our professional training is to prepare general education teachers to work effectively with English language learners (Ells). While working with the teachers on a daily basis, we know the immediate needs of the teachers. This motivated us to embark this book project. In recent years, the Ell school population has the highest increase among school populations. As the Nea data indicates, providing Ell students with high quality services and programs is an important investment in America's future (Nea, 2013). This book is our investment in helping teachers to meet their challenges and provide useful information and strategies for teaching Ells. The book is designed with K–12 teachers in mind. It is best used by teachers who have or will have Ells in their classrooms and who seek information and strategies to better work with and serve their Ells to achieve academic success. With this design, teachers can use the book as a text or reference tool. This book can also be adopted as text materials for professional training. Teachers are the most important factor for Ells' academic success.

A Book For Every Teacher: Teaching English Language Learners is packed full of valuable information for all teachers of ELL's. This book is beneficial for teachers with a wide spectrum of experience working with ELL's. Not only does this book include the necessary terminology but it also includes strategies that can be used on a daily basis to improve ELL student outcomes. The information provided in this book allows teachers to gain a better understanding of the techniques that positively influence the field of education. Don't pass up this extremely informative and enjoyable text.

I not only found 'A Book for Every Teacher' informational, I found it to be an enjoyable read. The book gave many helpful tips on how to better reach my ELL students. I have students in my class that do not receive extra help from an ESOL teacher, therefore, I have to make the necessary adjustments in my classroom. My lower level students also benefit from some of the changes that I have made. I recommend this book to all teachers, regardless if they do not have an ELL student in their classroom this year.

A Much Needed Book!

I would highly recommend this book. The outline of the content is great and easy to follow. Chapter 3 discuss teaching ELLs in the classroom. It give great strategies to use such as Using Visual Aids like pictures, images, and graphic organizers. It also mentions relating existing knowledge, presenting contextual information, and making use of technology as other great strategies. This book is the perfect read for any teacher with ELL students.
