About the Author

David Herron

David Herron has worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley for over 20 years. This includes companies both tiny and large. He has worked on a wide variety of projects, from an X.400 e-mail server and client application to assisting with the launch of the OpenJDK project (open source Java rocks), to Yahoo's Node.js application-hosting platform (Mojito and Manhattan), and applications to monitor solar power array performance. While a staff engineer at Sun Microsystems, David worked as the architect of the Java SE Quality Engineering team where he focused on test automation tools, including co-developing the AWT Robot class. He was involved in open source activities related to Java, including the OpenJDK project. Before Sun, he worked for VXtreme on software which eventually became Windows Media Player when Microsoft bought the company. At Mainsoft, David worked on a library that allowed developers to recompile Windows applications on Unix, and then participated in porting Internet Explorer to Unix. At The Wollongong Group, he worked on both e-mail client and server software and was part of several IETF working groups improving e-mail-related protocols. David is interested in electric vehicles, world energy supplies, climate change, and environmental issues, and he is a co-founder of Transition Silicon Valley. As an online journalist, he writes about electric cars and other green technology on LongTailPipe.com after having written for PlugInCars.com. He runs a large electric vehicle discussion website on VisForVoltage.org, and he blogs about other topics, including Node.js, Drupal, and Doctor Who on DavidHerron.com. Great book for both new and old NodeJS developers!

This book is a great step by step guide to get started with NodeJS in no time. It uses a lot of detailed examples to make you understand how NodeJS works and how it can be used to implement modern requirements like using third party authentication (e. g. login with Twitter), NoSQL databases (MongoDB is used here), responsive web design, or deploying with Docker.

I found it very useful that it provides detailed information on how to install NodeJS on Windows, OS X, Linux, etc. and that it contains facts about performance (regarding usability and scalability), which are useful when thinking about picking NodeJS for the next project. Also, the book presents an interesting link between NodeJS and green technology.

The book focuses on presenting NodeJS by building an actual application to which new features are added in every chapter. This application passes through many stages, starting from a simple basic web application which displays notes in the browser and ending up having a structure similar to a social networking application (a very simple one, but conclusive for its purpose).

The content is very up to date. Apart from presenting integration with Docker and MongoDB, and how to make your web application mobile friendly, it also uses in the examples the latest changes in JavaScript (ES-2015, ES-2016) which are now available in NodeJS.

Furthermore, the language used in this book makes it pleasant to read. The more complicated parts are often rephrased to emphasize the main idea and to make it as clear as possible before passing on to the next step. Humorous comments used occasionally make this book even more fun to read.

To sum up, I think this book is a good choice and I would recommend it to all new NodeJS developers as well as to those interested in implementing more modern requirements (having responsive web design, using Docker or logging in with third party authentication). Overall, it is a great book for every developer interested in staying up to date with technology.

Node.js from scratch

Great book with amazing attention to detail and exciting projects

Too often code books fall into the classic "copy this, get that" format for teaching code which is useful for short term projects but rarely useful for actual learning. With clear, concise examples that are legitimately interesting as well as step by step instructions for implementation on a wide variety of operating systems this book strikes the perfect balance between showing and telling which allows the reader to understand Node.

What I was really impressed with is the emphasis on testing and debugging. For me, learning how to debug and test/build the environment is half the battle of learning a new language. This book has a very in-depth tutorial to setting up an environment and using the debugging and testing tools available. This helps remove a lot of the mystery that comes with new languages, and builds a better foundation for the reader.

The book is also very well written and can explain really complex topics in a way that makes it easier to understand and uses code examples and exercises to supplement the text that is already there.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to any developers looking to dive into Node as well as any developers looking to brush up on the newest and latest changes to JavaScript.

Hepburn's son (with actor Mel Ferrer) shows his mother as a compassionate, emotional woman who searched for and offered love above all. He traces the roots of his mother's longing in her experiences with her distant father and the destruction of her native Belgium during WWII. Via photos and stories, he notes how Hepburn (1929-1993) aimed to live an everyday family life of home, school and holidays. Rendering her husbands respectfully and without off-color stories, Ferrer doesn't offer lascivious behind-the-scenes dramas or quips about directorial injustices. Instead, he lets designers and composers who worked with Hepburn talk about the actor's inimitable talents. Composer Henry Mancini believes her "quality of wistfulness" inspired the songs he wrote for her, especially Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River." Designer Cecil Beaton calls her an "authentic existential Galatea" with a voice containing the "quality of heartbreak." Ferrer also details Hepburn's influential friendship with clothing designer Hubert de Givenchy, including the dressmaker's generosity in Hepburn's final days. *Starred Review* When trying to define celluloid grace and spirit, one name shoots to mind--Hepburn. Two new memoirs--one written by Audrey Hepburn's son, the other by a well-known biographer who was like a son to Katharine Hepburn--recall these extraordinary women.

Although certain similarities exist beyond the coincidence of name (both were luminous presences on screen who followed their hearts), the differences were legion. Audrey's son, Sean Ferrer (son of actor Mel Ferrer), explains that acting was a second choice for Audrey after she was told she could not become a prima ballerina due to lack of proper training while growing up during World War II. Though happy to make one successful film after the other, she longed to have children and then retired to raise them. When UNICEF came calling, Audrey, remembering the aid she'd received after the war, became the agency's ambassador, never sparing herself, traveling to war-ravaged regions like Somalia to raise awareness of the plight of children. Katharine Hepburn, on the other hand, called herself a "pig" when it came to her career. Single-minded, she wanted neither husband nor children encumbering her as she devoted herself to her work.

These memoirs, though packaged very differently, both do a remarkable job of bringing readers the essence of each woman. Ferrer's remembrance is rather slight on text, but what is there is rich, evocative, and dotted with fresh anecdotes; certainly the facts concerning Audrey's final illness have never been disclosed in such heartbreaking detail. Bolstering the writing are loads of marvelous pictures, many straight from the family album, and Audrey's extraordinary beauty and joy shine from every one of them. Only she could wear a babushka on her wedding day and look fabulous.

Using a proposed article as entree to Katharine's home, Berg never left, staying often at Hepburn's places in New York and Connecticut. This arrangement gave him the opportunity for many conversations, the substance of which, according to Berg, Hepburn knew would be used as the basis of a book. Fans already know much of the outline of Hepburn's life, but this intensely readable account (held for publication until Hepburn's death) fills in amazing details about such pivotal events as the death of her brother by hanging, her relationships with powerful men like Howard Hughes and John Ford, and her slow, sad decline. Surprisingly, there's little new added to what we know of the Hepburn-Tracy love affair; even more surprising is Berg's veiled commentary (put into the mouth of a friend but seemingly confirmed by the author) revealing Hepburn's bisexuality. Berg's writing is so intimate that readers may feel they are hiding behind a curtain as they listen to the stories he elicits from his subject. Kate herself comes across pretty much the way she did on screen: bossy, courageous, and self-involved (though this trait was inverted when it came to caring for Tracy).

In the end, one Hepburn died too soon, and the other perhaps tarried too long, but they will both live on in their movies, which is very lucky for the rest of us. Ilene Cooper

A loving-- and elegant-- tribute

This is a completely beautiful book, lovely to look at and to read. I was, in fact, in tears after the first page. No one could have written this but someone as close as Sean was to his mother. The fact that he did, and did it so well, is a wonder and a gift to all Audrey fans. Yes, it's not a true "bio", but I don't think loving Audrey requires "all the facts please". Hers has always been a spirit that glowed beyond the silver screen. And it truly radiates from his heartfelt words, gorgeous pictures and presentation. It's the one book I would recommend to anyone who says "Why Audrey?" and the one book those who love her already must have.

An Elegant Spirit, indeed

Audrey Hepburn is the closest thing I'll ever have to an idol in my life. If you've seen her in a film you'll know that she could melt the hardest heart with a look, and she seemed to be an angel on Earth. If you've read a biography on her, you'll know that she was far more than a pretty face and really was an angel on Earth. Sean Hepburn Ferrer's book on his mother does nothing to dispel this notion.
This book is not so much a biography or even a memoir so much as a scrapbook of sorts. He writes about their everyday life and how she just wanted Sean and his brother Luca to be raised and loved right, and there are long sections of just pictures. Featuring never before seen pictures and some lovely personal stories, you walk away from this book feeling that you sat down to dinner with the family and were immediately embraced by Audrey herself. Sean writes from the heart, the best place to write about Audrey from. I don't want to give much away because I really feel this is a book everyone should peruse for themselves, but I will say that this book was worth the long wait.

A Talented,Caring,Elegant Woman and Mother

Audrey Hepburn chose to never write her autobiography because
she was afraid of offending someone inadvertandly by
careless revelations.
Her son,Sean,writes a loving tribute of this lovely lady
whose beauty shines through on every page,as it did in her
films.Films such as "The Nun's Story",the musical "My Fair
Lady"and Truman Capote's "Breakfast At Tiffany's."
He also writes of how important his Mothers'work in UNICEF
became to her,in her later years,and in turn to himself.
Audrey was born in Holland and during World Warll she
suffered from malnutrition, brought on by a diet consisting
of tulip bulbs and water.She often went without food all
day.After the war ended,she was a beneficiary of UNICEF.
She understood the chidren of the Third World and their
suffering better than many celebrities.
In many ways,it is refreshing to read of Ms.Hepburn from
her eldest son's point of view.(Audrey had a younger son
she adored named Luca Dotti)from her second marriage.
This is a true love story.
For any woman who admired Audrey Hepburn,this is a
perfect Mother's Day Gift.For anyone,this is a
gift and the proceeds go to the "Audrey Hepburn
Children's Fund."

Jonathan Pine, night manager at a Cairo hotel, helps Arab playboy Freddie Hamid's mistress Madame Sophie photocopy papers linking him to arms mogul Richard Roper and, while he's at it, makes an extra copy to send to a friend in the Secret Service--only to find that the leak has gotten back to Freddie and that Jonathan's belated, guilty devotion to Sophie can't protect her from a fatal beating. Six months later, Jonathan, now working in Geneva, meets Roper in person and, vowing revenge, volunteers for Leonard Burr's fledgling government agency as the inside man who can supply actionable details of Roper's next arms- for-drugs deal. With the help of Whitehall mandarin Rex Goodhew, Burr sets up a plausibly shady dossier for Jonathan and stages the kidnapping of Roper's son so that Jonathan can foil the snatch and get invited aboard Roper's yacht. Le Carre at his best

Le Carre at his best. It's a bit complex when it comes the the list of characters - especially when considering one has multiple identities which keep changing. Outside of a thoughtful twisting, turning plot, I most enjoyed the careful and thorough descriptions of places, scenes and the characters themselves. Having first watched the 6-part BBC mini-series with the same name, I would suggest reading the book first. At the end of the day they are both superbly done, although the updating in the visual representation looses many of key elements I enjoyed in the book.

The old master at it again

Contrary to some commentators, John Le Carre has not lost his ability to tell a wonderfully thought provoking story, even if the Cold War is over. The most brilliant aspect of this gripping story is the delightful detail of the author's brush when describing characters. Particularly significant are the English government characters, and the Secret Service operatives. Not surprised that if had to be made into a six hour series, there is just too much detail to be crammed into a movie-length feature. The twists and turns of the plot keeps the reader enthralled from first to last. Very clever, and very absorbing.
