Excellent Beginner Book on HTML and CSS

I like both Head First HTML and CSS as well as Head First HTML5 Programming by Eric and Elisabeth. This book is clearly intended for the beginner, teaching the basics and fundamentals of using HTML and CSS to design web pages. It assumes no experience or pre-existing knowledge on HTML and CSS. It starts you learning from scratch and slowly builds upon that knowledge over the course of the book.

As with all Head First Books, there are lots of images, games, and exercises to help reinforce the information taught in the book. Some people do not like this style of writing, and I will admit it took me some time to get used to it, too. Therefore, although the information presented is top-notch, you may want to thumb through the pages to verify you like the style of writing before making the purchase.

The focus of the book is on teaching HTML and CSS. The book does not help you set-up an environment to create and serve web pages using an HTML Editor and Web Server. Therefore, you will need to look elsewhere for that information. The book does point to some resources at the end of the book ( under things they don't cover ), but you are on your own in finding an editor and installing a web server to view the HTML and CSS. Of course, you may not need a web server depending on your development needs.

Don't expect coverage on advanced HTML and CSS features. Again, the book teaches you the fundamentals and prepares you for more advanced concepts. This is strictly a beginner book and intermediate and advanced web designers and web developers will be bored with the information (unless like me you plan to use this information to teach and guide others).

I highly recommend this book to those completely new to HTML and CSS and those who will enjoy the writing style of the Head First Series of books! After reading this, I highly recommend Head First HTML5 Programming to learn JavaScript and more advanced features in HTML5!

Makes HTML Fun

It is as if a technical manual and Christopher Moore had a baby. It is fun to read and quick to learn. I was making rudimentary web pages in just a couple of days. I had absolutely no previous experience with HTML at all before picking this book up. My experience with webpages and blogging were limited to the free subscription to Wordpress. Now I am about 1/4 of the way into the book and already have a website that I built myself running through a hosting company and up on the web for the world to see. Each day, I learn a little something new and am able to apply it immediately. It is exciting and fun! Even though they say you can go through the entire book without getting a hosting company, I strongly suggest you make the effort necessary to get hooked up to the internet. The lessons come fast and are easy to comprehend and put to action BUT I find it vital to practice each lesson on my own to memorize them thoroughly. That is done by playing with my own website, building different parts of it according to what I am learning in the book. This is where most of my time is spent. Getting MY OWN work loaded up onto my own hosting server then being able to get online and see MY site, written completely from scratch by me is unbelievably satisfying. I am sure that I will be buying other books to get a deeper knowledge of HTML and CSS but this book has completely removed any doubts of my ability to do this. I CAN WRITE HTML and CSS! Very cool!

fun ideas and techniques on crafting your own types and fonts

If you like lettering, typography and crafting, this book will be right up your alley! Charlotte Rivers has picked a range of type designs and designers to showcase in Handmade Type Workshop. The typefaces in the book are created through various media: hand drawn on pen and paper or illustrated; stitched, cut out on paper or drawn on the computer; crafted in 3D form from materials like food, ribbons, clay and even bicycle tyre; made from found objects. There are also chapters on creating a font (with tips and technical information like how to extract letter forms from photographs or convert characters to vector graphics) and creating a font family (a guide on using FontLab or Fontographer).

There is a lot of useful information for font lovers in the book. More than 20 designers are profiled and they each briefly describe their work and work processes; several of their letter forms are showcased and best of all, most of the profiles are accompanied by a tutorial from the designer so you can pick up techniques and start creating your own typefaces and fonts. Just how handcrafted, digital or free form is up to you! I started doodling before I hit page 30 and have had many hours of fun since - something I'm sure I'll continue to enjoy doing.

Short but worth it!

Wow oh WOW is all I could say. Short but so unbelievably fantastic. When you first start reading you feel sorry for Raven, Linc was so mean but you could feel the sexual tension between the 2 of them. It just got better and the sex scene was OMG hot and steamy. Can not wait for the next book. Another book hit out of the park Danielle. Loved it and you.

SHE PROMISED TO HAVE A BLURB EXPLAINING THAT THE ACTUAL STORY IS ONLY 28k WORDS. THAT IS APPROX 62 PAGES IF SINGLE SPACED AND 90 PAGES IF SPACED 1.5. SINCE I HAVE THE ORIGINAL NOVELLA, I'M NOT SURE WHERE THE PAGE NUMBERS FALL NOW. AS YOU CAN SEE BY MY ORIGINAL REVIEW, I GAVE IT LOW STARS BECAUSE OF THIS VERY REASON, NOT BECAUSE ANYTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE STORY. THANK YOU TO MS. What happened?? At 58%..the actual story ended and the rest of the book was snippets from other books. I AM SO VERY disappointed. I feel like I paid for highlights. Ugh!! It completely took any possible joy I could have gotten from the actual story!

Not as described.

Okay so the book, was a decent book. I liked that you could feel the lust between the two man characters and even though Linc was a bit of a jerk, I liked him. But then again, I like jerks. However there were still editing highlights that were never corrected and even more that needed to be done. Secondly the book states 165 pages. It's not even close, the story ends at like the 60% mark. So for those reasons, I had to rate it down.

Ideas, not instructions

As a child of the 80's, I remember fondly the old LEGO Idea books. In those books, there were lots of photos of LEGO creations, and instructions that showed how to build some of the models in the book. I remember the Lego Idea Book 6000 the best, that's the one that follows Bill and Mary as they build a house, explore a city, travel to space, and then back in time to a medieval castle. When I saw the title of this book, the obvious connection was to those old books, so how does it compare?

The one thing that's missing is the instructions - this is not an instruction manual. Also, unlike Sean Kenney's smaller books (Cool City, Cool Cars and Trucks, and Cool Robots), this is a big book - nearly 200 pages! Like Sean's books, this book is filled with photos of LEGO creations. Like Sean's books, the intent of the book is to give you ideas on how to build things. You'll find that a lot of ideas can be crammed into 200 pages.

The book is broken up into sections, essentially these are: vehicles, buildings, spaceships & robots, castles, pirates & adventure, and real world creations. This last section is very interesting, showing you things such as picture frames and pencil holders made out of LEGO. As you can see, like the old LEGO Idea book, this book hits on many of LEGO's core themes.

Each of the sections starts out with a two page spread of useful parts that can be used to build creations in that section. I found that even these pages gave me ideas and started me thinking on how a particular part could be used. After that you'll find a number of creations beautifully photographed, often with multiple views which come in handy if you are attempting to reverse engineer one of the creations so that you can build it yourself. I can't tell you how many times I've looked at a LEGO truck and wished I could see how the frame was built. The multiple angle photos in this book help so that you won't experience that problem. At the end of each section, you'll find a few pages where you "Meet the Builder." These include some interview style questions where you learn about the builder who wrote a particular section of the book. I was surprised to find that one of the builders is only 18!

I think LEGO fans of all ages will enjoy the book, but young children might have a hard time handling the book due to its size. The lack of instructions also mean that it is probably more suited to an experienced LEGO builder - either an older child or a parent who enjoys building with younger children. My six year old son enjoys paging through the book, but it's a bit much for my 3 year old to handle. Neither would be able to build anything in this book without my help.

Overall, I think this is another great book option to inspire LEGO builders - but remember this book is about ideas and imagination - and you can't write instructions for that. If you know what you are buying, I think you'll really like this book, but don't expect it to be what it is not. If you want instructions, try one of the Brickmaster books such as LEGO City Brickmaster.

Many children will enjoy looking at the photos and reading or having the ...

The description of this book is somewhat deceiving. The pages show a lot of Lego specialty pieces (from particular Lego models) that are slightly reconfigured. One would need to have purchased nearly every specialty model to build the forms shown in the book. Also, if one does happen to have the pieces needed, there are no "instructions" or steps shown to build the model shown.

The book is cleverly annotated with captions and well-photographed. Many children will enjoy looking at the photos and reading or having the captions read to them.

If, however, one is looking for ideas for a child to use the hundred or thousand of Legos sitting in a box, this book will not help.

Perfect for "free builders", not for those who can't substitute.

I love this, but one of my kids not so much. So this book is meant to give you ideas of smaller projects, but doesn't lay out all the instructions for you. In fact, several of them you can't even see what bricks they used for certain parts. My 5 year old is very creative and likes to "free build". He loves this. He's all about substituting whatever bricks we have to make the project. My 9 year old is not a fan. He likes to build off the instructions the complete sets. He doesn't like to "free build" as much, and he takes the book too literally. If he sees it has a piece we don't have he doesn't want to make it.

YA-An introspective and poignant book that is well-worth reading. With the help of Langston Hughes's biographer, Ashe has written a very absorbing account of his life. He tells of his mother's death when he was six years old and the strong influence of his loving but demanding father that stood him in good stead when he entered the all-white world of tennis in the 1960s. He recounts his athletic career and the difficulties he experienced on the court with players such as John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors. But the major portion of the book focuses on the 1980s, during which time he had two heart operations and contracted the AIDS virus via a blood transfusion. Although not a homosexual, Ashe became a sympathetic activist for the gay community. He was very vocal in his last years, speaking out against prejudice towards AIDS victims, racism, apartheid, and U.S. policy towards Haitians wishing to enter this country. This is the inspiring story of a premier athlete and a fine human being who cared passionately about his profession, his family, and the causes he embraced.

Days of Grace begins with an understandably annoyed Ashe holding a TV press conference to preempt a newspaper report that he has been stricken with the AIDS virus. After a diatribe against the invasion of his privacy, Ashe relates how he managed to launch a tennis career that led him to international fame and fortune while others fought for equality. The late tennis star then takes up the matter of apartheid in South Africa. All the autobiographical observations of his career are, like his social comments (e.g., being black is worse than having AIDS), intelligently thought out. Finally, the fatherly words of advice he hopes daughter Camera will read and follow after his death give this audiobook an appeal to a wide audience. Actor Joe Morton provides a fine narration.

Simply Beautiful

`Days of Grace' is possibly the most moving biography, if not book, I have ever read, by a man whose courage, determination and decency towards fellow man have left me in awe.
The book contains moments of humour, of deep sadness and of joy, and throughout there is a vein of truthfulness that is unparalleled in anything I have ever read. The experiences that Ashe had in his life were so many and so varied, from the highs of winning three Grand Slam's to falling ill to heart disease and AIDS. His relationships with his parents, his wife and daughter, tennis players including Connors and McEnroe, and with his peers in segregated Virginia are all explored thoughtfully and with careful reflection.
In short, Ashe's book offers an account of his life, his beliefs and his final thoughts on the world and his life. Ashe triumphed in sport to become wealthy and well known, but suffered from racial prejudice as a child and terrible diseases as an adult. Yet not once did wealth change his outlook or basic lifestyle nor did he give up in the face of racism or death. Instead Ashe took another path, the noble path - he showed deep respect and understanding towards his fellow man, he used his wealth and his disease to help thousands of others and he never lost site of the moral lessons he had learned as child.
`Days of Grace' is a remarkable book from Arthur Ashe, an extraordinary man.

A MAN OF DIGNITY AND GRACE

I met this gentleman briefly. We were travelling on "Southern Airlines" between Atlanta and Birmingham. Both the man and the airline are gone. He was gracious, a man of dignity. As his memoir unfolds one can't help but be inspired by his example of courage, discipline and responsibility. Many knew him as a great tennis champion, but the book reveals the man, a father, a husband, a social activist, a religious spiritual being. It is a poignant testament to a beautiful being. He died of aids contracted through a blood transfusion. Most touching is his letter to his daughter, in which he says," Don't be angry with me if I am not there in person, alive and well, when you need me......... whereever I am when you feel sick at heart and weary of ife, or when you stumble and fall and don't know if you can get up again, think of me. I will be watching and smiling and cheering you on." This is a man who mastered his destiny. The book contains beautiful photos shared by his wife, a gifted photographer. The book is a remarkable legacy to his family and to all who recognize greatness. Excellent and enjoyable reading.

a tad too voyeuristic

We live in a day and age when the President of the United States tells us what kind of underwear he sports and, through a string of unfortunate circumstances, we find out about even his genital abnormalities. He famously attests to feeling our pain, tears up at the drop of a hat and bites his own lip almost as often as those of the women he accosts. No emotion, real or faked, is allowed to go unmentioned. No facet of his life is too private to remain hidden. He seems to be incapable of embarassment, devoid of shame, almost proud of personal scandal. Everything--good, bad & indifferent--is on display and no thought is given to how the public and his peers perceive him. His life is about personal gratification and little else.
How different this is from the example of George Washington. As Gordon Wood has written in an excellent essay in the Virginia Historical Review, to Washington reputation was of paramount importance. Nothing mattered more to him than how he was perceived by his fellow men. This obsession fostered in him a moral rectitude that has served to make him seem somehow less than human, as if he had become a statue before he was even dead. But it also made him a world historical figure, a man of unquestioned greatness. And if our modern sensibilities find something vainglorious in his vanity and we feel a certain lack of connection with him because of his seeming perfection, at least he has maintained an aura of mystery and a sterling reputation for two centuries and counting.
What's the point of all this? Just that Arthur Ashe seems to me to have been the George Washington of modern sport, an accomplishment that was all the more notable at a time when his fellow atheletes were increasingly emulating Bill Clinton. The title of this memoir is especially appropriate because throughout his entire career Ashe seemed to be imbued with a quality of personal grace. He was always a class act, always reserved, always professional, politically active without being shrill--he simply seemed to be better balanced and more grounded than most of those he competed against. In fact, the rap on him was that he was too self-contained and that he needed to be more outer directed in order to win tennis matches (see Orrin's review of John McPhee's Levels of the Game). Whether being more emotionally labile is truly of benefit on the court seems open to debate, but at any rate, Ashe remained a somewhat enigmatic, enormously respected figure.
It therefore came as a genuine shock when he announced to the world that he had contracted AIDs. Suddenly this most private of public men was inextricablty tied to a disease whose associations were overwhelming behavioral. What had happened to bring Ashe into the glare of the sensational public spotlight and, in particular, how was it possible that he, of all people, came to be identified with a disease that carried with it such negative moral connotations? This is the point where Ashe begins his moving memoir.
In answering these questions, he is forced to reveal himself in ways that he never had during his career. The effect is by turns affecting and disquieting. I understand why he felt the need to share so much with the public, if for no other reason than to protect his carefully carved reputation, but by the end of the book, when he closes with a long admonitory letter that he wrote to his daughter, I just felt that he had gone too far. Ultimately, he has nearly done a disservice to himself by exposing so much. His life story and his description of the way in which family, sport and God sustained and nourished him throughout that exemplary life is eminently worthwhile. But I finished the book feeling almost like a voyuer and wishing that he'd held back a little more. I preferred him when he was more Washington than Clinton.

About the Author
Andrew Karmen has been a professor in the Sociology Department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice since 1978. He has taught courses on a wide range of subjects including general sociology, criminal justice, criminology, crime and justice in New York City, drug abuse, delinquency, social problems, race relations, research methods, statistics, and victimology. He has previously served as the coordinator of both the criminology and criminal justice undergraduate majors, the co-director of the master's program in criminal justice, and as a member of the doctoral faculty. Dr. Karmen has written journal articles and chapters in books on a number of subjects, including drug abuse, police use of deadly force, auto theft, providing defense attorneys to indigents, victims' rights, the victimization of women, and predictions about the plight of crime victims in the future. His investigation of why crime rates rise and fall, NEW YORK MURDER MYSTERY: THE TRUE STORY BEHIND THE CRIME CRASH OF THE 1990s, (NYU Press, paperback edition 2006) unearths statistical evidence that casts doubt on most of the widely held beliefs about the reasons for the dramatic improvement in public safety in New York City. In 2012, Dr. Karmen was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the World Society Of Victimology.

About the Author
S. Alice Callahan (1868–94) was a mixed-blood of Muscogee descent. She attended the Wesleyan Female Institute in Staunton, Virginia, and became a Methodist teacher for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation in Oklahoma. Wynema was her first and only novel. A. LaVonne Brown Ruoff is professor emerita of English at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and the author of American Indian Literatures: An Introduction, Bibliographic Review and Selected Bibliography.

A piece of history

This book is considered to be the first novel written by a Native American woman, Sophia Alice Callahan, who was the daughter of a Muscogee father and a EuroAmerican mother. Originally published in 1891, this 1997 reprint includes an explanatory introduction by a literature scholar as well as biographical material about Callahan, who was about 23 when she wrote it and 26 when she died. "Wynema" tells the story of a young Indian child who becomes the student and then friend of a white missionary woman. Through this structure, Wynema grows up and learns about the world, but also teaches her white mentors. Together, they learn about each other's cultures and advocate for women's rights and Native American rights. Through her characters, Callahan criticizes U.S. Indian policies and the massacre at Wounded Knee Creek, an actual event that occurred in 1891. This was Callahan's first publication, and it shows. It is at times inconsistent and melodramatic, but at others, compelling and heartbreaking. So don't read it because you want an excellent novel, because it is not. If you want to read an historic artifact and to experience the viewpoint of a young woman who had very clear opinions about the state of the two worlds she inhabited, then get it.

Great book!! I'd say the humor in this book and the Jerry Garcia quotes made me want to keep reading. Not fabulous but fun. Figuring out the killer was logically obvious not very far along on the story, though it was worth following it out to the end. Light compared to a lot of mysteries out there, though the characters did have substance and were believable. A nice quick read of a book that's good for the beach or a mental health day

This is such a singular approach to drawing animals. I'm thus affected with however my drawings clothed and feel my drawings skills have improved once reading this book. In part I, he relates the origins of distilling in Ireland (an Arabic hand-down to Irish monks); the links with Scotland; the wild years when illicit distilling was rampant and shebeens proliferated as corruption increased; the coming of legitimacy and temperance; the development of the Coffey still (which ultimately helped to sink the industry); the golden years; and, prohibition in the USA and the emergence of the Free State in 1922. In part II, each distillery is listed and accompanied with archive photos and etchings. Brian Townsend is a journalist with an abiding interest in architecture and industrial archaeology. His is author of The Glory That Was Home (1990) and Scotch Missed: The Lost Distilleries of Scotland (1993). He lives near Dundee.
